Three Mints Produced American Silver Eagles

American Silver Eagles have been produced at three mints: the Philadelphia mint, the San Francisco mint, and the West Point mint. Both the West Point mint and the San Francisco mint issued proofs. Silver American Eagles that are from San Francisco have an “S”, while the more recently produced proofs from the West Point mint carry the letter “W” on the reverse. Some of the Silver American Eagles from the Philadelphia mint carry a “P” mint mark.

No Mint Mark On Silver American Eagles Bullion Coins

Silver American Eagle bullion coins do not have a mint mark. Until 1998 the bullion coins were minted at Philadelphia. Between 1999 and 200 they were minted at both the West Point and the Philadelphia mints. Since then all of the bullion Silver American Eagles have bee minted solely at West Point.

Between 2006 and 2008 uncirculated American Silver Eagles were produced at West Point and bear a "W" as the mint mark.

Silver American Eagles Obverse Styled After Walking Liberty Half Dollar

The obverse design of the American Silver Eagles are an adaption of the much beloved “Walking Liberty” half dollar coin that was minted between 1916 and 1947. The reverse side of Silver American Eagles is a heraldic eagle.

American Silver Eagles Varieties

In 2008 the first significant variety was released. The reverse of the coin was slightly changed. If you compare the 2008 American Silver Eagles to earlier Silver American Eagles you'll see a difference in the "U" in United States as well as the dash between Silver and One.

Because the number of Silver American Eagles minted vary widely, the value of each of the  uncirculated and proof American Silver Eagles will vary as well.
